Leylines and Magic

The world of the Medieverse is one inhabited by a stream of magical energy. This stream flows through the earth like a current. The creatures that inhabit the verse take advantage of the Leylines in different ways.

  • Anthro sorcerers tap into this flow of magic to inherit its power.
  • Spikes of ley energy can create the natural-born magical traits sometimes seen in anthros and other creatures.

There are three primary ways in which spellcasters can attain magic.

  1. Innately
  2. Trained
  3. Gifted

Innate Magic

These are creatures that are born infused with magic and have abilities stemming from that magical origin. Dragons fall under this category by default since they are magical beings. It's very rare for there to be a creature outside of dragons to be innately magical.

Trained Magic

Creatures would learn how to use certain tools, rituals, and other applications of magical knowledge to produce magical influence. Most wizards and witches require a catalyst of some sort to use magic to its fullest potential.

Gifted

This is where the person is not innately magical and does not necessarily know how it works, but are granted magical abilities by a powerful, external entity.

Laws of Magic

Magic is rather commonplace in the land of Aestrunia, though not very powerful. Most people use magical items, which are made by wizards and skilled smiths. An example of a magical item is Meriel's Sonustone, a precious stone that she uses to be able to speak to dragons. Anyone could shoot fireballs at will, but only with the right items given the right attributes in their possession. This makes magic quick and lends itself to martial application.

Since most Anthros are not innately magical, their usage of magic would appear rather artificial because of how they need catalysts, but they have utilized this power in all sorts of activities, such as building structures and laying forcefields. Even if one is not innately magical, they carry the Mana within them to be able to route their energy through a catalyst and accomplish magical feats.

A person's Mana restricts their magical power limits as well as the amount of magic they can conjure in a time. To regain Mana, Anthros need to devour magical creatures, or monsters. No amount of practice casting, exercise, or meditating will do the trick. To grow stronger in the usage of magic, Anthros have to swallow and digest something stronger than them, and that would determine the upper limits of an anthro's magical abilities and frequency of usage. Eating a lot of weaker creatures or monsters does nothing except fill one's belly and recharge their Mana.

Dragons and Monsters

Dragons are the supreme and most powerful species on the planet. They are large in size, with powerful muscles and equipped with innate magical powers. They are, however, mainly divided and split into their own territories according to their elements. They don’t get along with each other very well, and as such, mating is rather rare, but Dragons can live for a very long time thanks to their magical origins.

Dragons have different wingspans according to their elements:

  • Fire/Air dragons have the longest wingspans since they are most liable to be flying more often and for longer distances.
  • Water dragons have shorter wingspans for shorter trips above water.
  • Earth dragons have the smallest wingspans, mostly taking to the ground and making their dwellings in caves and underground.

Anthros make a very big deal out of the feat of dragon slaying. It is said that the essence of life itself dwells deep in the heart of dragons, and this is a primary reason that Anthros would seek to kill them. Some have even rumored that an anthro could turn into a dragon hybrid if they came in close contact with this essence.

Monsters are abundant in this verse, and are formed from feral creatures absorbing magic. Anything can be infused with wild magic. There being more animals than Anthros, monsters would be more common than innately supernatural anthros. Monsters are often hunted and eaten to replenish mana or to reach a higher level of magical power. Of course, the hunters can find themselves eaten by the monsters for the same reason.

Flora

Plants in the world are all imbued with magic thanks to their roots tapping closer to the Leylines. They all have varying degrees of magical power in them, making them very useful for alchemists. They are sought out or grown regularly by shopkeepers as an easy-to-access asset that would always sell because of Anthros' constant need for Mana and magical power in general.
